In her sub-article for the article “The Pros and Cons of Allowing Syrian and Iraqi Refugees into the United States” (2016), the piece is divided into a section of pros and cons, each one with several different people’s perspectives. In specific, one particular author, Sheila Jackson Lee argues “in opposition to the American Security Against Enemies Act of 2015 (American SAFE Act)” (2016), which calls for a more extensive screening process on the incoming Syrian refugees, making it harder for them to enter. Lee supports her argument using an appeal to the reader’s emotions, illustrating the harsh scenarios involving children and mothers, and backs up her argument using statistics and personal experience. Lee’s purpose in writing this is to state her view regarding the current bill, and convince her fellow colleagues to vote against it. Lee’s argumentative tone and defensive language indicates that this article was intended for the representatives voting on this matter.
